Discover the Caglieron caves

Are you in Veneto for a short weekend getaway and want to take a trip to a hidden and surprising natural spot? We have just the thing for you: the Caglieron Caves, in Fregona (TV). In this corner of Veneto, time seems to have made a secret pact with nature. It's not the usual postcard of vineyard-lined hills, nor the majesty of the Dolomites, but a more intimate, hidden place, where the hustle and bustle of the world fades to make way for the song of the water.

An ideal destination if you've decided to stay in a short-term rental in Veneto and want an experience that combines the wild beauty of a natural canyon with the ingenuity of history and human labor. Here, you can walk along wooden walkways between rock walls and waterfalls that dance all around.

The Caglieron Caves are more than just a walk; they're a journey into a fairytale world, perfect for those of you who choose to stay in one of our independent apartments and are looking for an unforgettable excursion just a few kilometers from the Prosecco Hills.

The magical trail to the Caglieron Caves: between canyons and waterfalls

The Caglieron Caves tour is a loop of about 1 kilometer that takes an hour to complete and is a truly enchanting experience. This natural complex is located a short distance from Treviso and consists of a series of rock cavities naturally carved by the Caglieron River over at least 10 million years, alternating with other artificial caves from which sandstone, known as Piera dolza (soft stone), was quarried around 1500.

As soon as you arrive, you descend the path and notice the air taking on a different aspect: it becomes fresh, humid, and scented with moss. The natural gorge carved by the Caglieron stream is truly captivating, but even more fascinating is the unique interplay between nature and man. Here, for centuries, local stonemasons have quarried the soft sandstone used to build the doorposts and lintels of the most beautiful homes in Vittorio Veneto and the surrounding area.

Today, those wounds in the mountain have been reclaimed by nature: wooden walkways literally guide visitors into the gorge, passing beneath rock ceilings and over thundering waterfalls, in a play of light and shadow that makes every photograph a miniature masterpiece. The deeper you descend, the more the temperature changes, and in the deepest parts of the caves, the light becomes increasingly dim, allowing you to observe a series of microenvironments of botanical and zoological interest.

The end of the path coincides with an ancient mill and restaurant and a small mill which often hosts interesting photographic exhibitions.

The secret of “Grotta” cheese

As you explore, sharpen your sight and sense of smell: one of the complex's caves is not just a natural monument, but a veritable aging cellar. The local dairy uses the cave's constant, dark microclimate to age Formaggio di Grotta del Caglieron, a cheese with a unique flavor that absorbs the aromas of the stone and humidity. A gastronomic souvenir we highly recommend seeking out in the shops of Fregona once you return to the surface.
