A dream city break in Venice

Dragging a suitcase through the streets and bridges of Venice isn't exactly a zen experience. At one point, we wondered if it wouldn't have been better to travel with a backpack. The truth is, once we reached the right door, we felt like Indiana Jones finding the entrance to a hidden temple.

From the tourist-filled streets of the heart of Venice, the map leads us down a dead end, and suddenly the buzz of people dies down, like we've stepped into another dimension. It's not our first time in Venice , but previous visits have been made in hotels and bed and breakfasts, finding them extremely touristy and lacking in personalization.

This time it was different: we wanted a memorable late-summer city break, we wanted to see Venice in a more authentic way : that's why we chose an independent apartment . They kindly welcomed us for the agreed-upon check-in and invited us to climb a few more steps: we were on the fourth floor of a truly charming, refined, and elegant historic building, like something out of a movie. We said goodbye to our host, who had provided us with so much useful information, and the apartment remained at our complete disposal.

An apartment that smells like home

From the fresh, fragrant entrance, we knew this would be our refuge for the next few days. We immediately left our things in the small entryway because we wanted to explore our apartment: we immediately found the living area with an open-plan kitchenette, a dining table, and a relaxation area with sofas and a TV. We really had everything : a refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker! Just like home.

Not to mention the sleeping area, with a king-size bed, two bathrooms, and two amazing showers, complete with a washing machine, hairdryer, and iron to keep things spotless. We immediately felt so at home that he turned on the WiFi to finish some work while I went to freshen up before exploring the city. It all happened so naturally, as if we had finally arrived at home.

As soon as we relax for a moment, we realize that every detail here is thoughtfully designed , and that truly makes all the difference: the apartment is tastefully furnished, refined without being overbearing. Clean lines, warm tones, and a contemporary touch blend perfectly with the building's historic soul. Every corner seems designed to make us feel at ease: the soft lighting in the living room invites relaxation, while small, practical details like convenient outlets for charging phones and laptops are truly a small gesture of quality.

The view from the windows offers glimpses of Venetian rooftops and bell towers peeking out from between the houses: this alone is enough to remind us that we're not in just any place. Here, the atmosphere of Venice enters your home , unfiltered.

Venice at your fingertips with the San Marco apartment

We decide to leave immediately: St. Mark's Square is just a few minutes away, and in less than ten steps we're back in the heart of the city. But the difference, compared to previous times, is immediately noticeable: this time we know we have a refuge all our own to return to . There's no cold reception, no breakfast hours, no keys left at the concierge's desk. Just us, our keys, and the freedom to experience Venice our way.

That same evening, after a stroll through the illuminated streets and a quick dinner at a bacaro, returning to the apartment was like breathing new life. No rushing to meet schedules, no chaos . We put on a movie, with a glass of wine from the shop down the street, and felt like temporary residents. The difference is enormous: as a tourist, you gaze at Venice; as a guest in an apartment, you experience it.

The next day, the routine had already changed: breakfast prepared by us, comfortable shoes on, and off to the Biennale, just a stone's throw from home. On the way home, we stopped at a small shop and, without thinking twice, bought cheese and fresh bread. At the hotel, we would have had to keep the bags in the room, hoping for a half-empty mini-bar. Here, however, we simply opened the fridge, put everything away, and enjoyed it later, in comfort.

And when we returned in the afternoon, tired after miles of walking, we realized once again the value of this apartment : two bathrooms, two showers, absolute comfort. He gets ready to go out again, while I finish writing a couple of emails on the computer connected to the WiFi. Separate spaces, zero obstacles.

The difference, ultimately, lies here: in an apartment like this, you're part of the city . You wake up to the sounds of the street, shop at the supermarket like a Venetian, decide when to go home or cook something on the fly. The city touches you differently: more authentic, more personal, more yours.

Check-out and goodbye in Venice

On our last morning, we wake up early , almost as if to steal a few more hours in Venice. Light filters through the windows, and we already know the city outside is preparing for the usual frenzy of footsteps, voices, and trolleys clanking on the cobblestones. We, however, take it easy: breakfast in the kitchen, suitcases packed slowly, and a last look at the apartment that for a few days has truly been our home.

Before leaving, we pause in the living room: it's incredible how quickly we've become accustomed to these spaces ; they feel like ours, and we're a little sad to leave them to someone else. The table that has become our resting place, the bedroom that welcomed us after endless days, the bathrooms that have made everything easier. It wasn't just any living room, but a small parallel life, with our own rhythms and our own freedom.

Outside, the buzz of the city welcomes us again, but this time we perceive it differently. We weren't spectators, we were part of Venice , with our keys in our pockets and the feeling of having our own little corner in the heart of the lagoon. We can only hope that someone else will find themselves sharing our experience, with this beautiful apartment in the center of Venice .
