The exhibition "Etruscans and Venetians. Waters, Cults and Sanctuaries " is a unique opportunity to discover the Etruscan cults linked to water, a sacred and vital element.

Like every spring in Venice, the magical awakening makes this time of year the perfect opportunity to indulge in a vacation in one of the world's most captivating art cities. In addition to the wonders the Serenissima has to offer year-round, this is a cultural event of exceptional scope, an exhibition that is an unmissable experience for those who wish to explore the lagoon and learn about it through the centuries, starting from its origins.

The sacred power of water at the Doge's Palace

Housed in the magnificent spaces of the Doge's Apartment, inside the Doge's Palace , this extraordinary exhibition entitled " Etruscans and Venetians. Waters, Cults and Sanctuaries " is open to the public from March 6 until September 29, 2026. Expertly curated by Chiara Squarcina and Margherita Tirelli in collaboration with the Luigi Rovati Foundation, the exhibition delves into the complex universe of pre-Roman religious practices.

A fascinating tale in which water is seen not only as a vital natural resource but also takes on a generative, therapeutic, and identity-building value, becoming the fulcrum around which ancient healing cults and majestic sanctuaries develop.

The exhibition will feature priceless archaeological finds, many of which are completely unseen and brought to light only through recent excavations. A spiritual journey begins with an exploration of Etruscan devotion, introduced by the Head of Leucothea from Pyrgi ; this exceptional loan from the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia symbolizes divine protection over sailors and consecrated the sea as a sacred space.

Moving towards the ancient Venetian world, attention is captured by absolute treasures such as the bronze disc of Montebelluna , depicting the goddess Clavigera, and the precious rim of the cauldron of Altino, which preserves an extremely rare votive formula engraved in the Venetic language.

The exhibition chooses to connect and not only describe a people, the Etruscans, but to ideally connect Etruscans and Venetians , the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian sides, to highlight two different ways of inhabiting the sea, travel and the world, creating a unique dimension that intersects with the history of the peninsula.

An immersive journey through the rooms of the Doge's Apartment

Crossing the threshold of the Doge's Apartment in the Doge's Palace is like embarking on a true spiritual journey, unfolding through a breathtaking exhibition. The exhibition unfolds through thematic chapters that transform archaeology into a living and vibrant narrative, inviting visitors to explore the profound connection between humanity, the divine, and the element of water.

The first part of the journey is entitled " The Etruscans and the Sacred " and gathers travelers under the solemn gaze of the Head of Leucothea of Pyrgi, a deity linked to the sea and the protection of those sailing towards the unknown. Proceeding through the rooms, one is transported to the port sanctuaries and open-air cults of Vulci, where the iconic gold plates and the finds from the Banditella deposit stand out.

The heart of this section, however, beats in the chapter " Miraculous Waters ," a tribute to the healing power of nature: here, for the first time, you can admire up close the sensational and very recent bronzes re-emerged from the thermal mud of San Casciano dei Bagni. Alongside anatomical votive offerings and elegant imported Greek ceramics discovered in Marzabotto, the mythological figure of Daedalus reminds us how these people combined the deepest devotion with sophisticated hydraulic engineering.

The narrative continues in the chapter " The Venetians and the Sacred, " where the focus shifts to the freshwaters of the Northeast, with priceless jewels such as the Montebelluna disc featuring the goddess Clavigera. A moving display demonstrates the simplicity of everyday faith, from tiny Montegrotto cups used to invoke health, to the ladles (simpula) of Lagole di Calalzo, which were ritually broken in half at the end of ceremonies. A fascinating focus is dedicated to the sanctuary of Este, where the cult of the goddess Pora Reitia was intertwined with literacy and women's work, as evidenced by ancient writing tablets and loom weights.

Sealing this bridge between antiquity and the present, the exhibition concludes with a powerful and unexpected contemporary installation curated by Giovanni Bonotto. The work, titled " We are bodies of water ," envelops the visitor in a majestic tapestry woven from recycled industrial plastics and optical fibers, accompanied by a sound poem that whispers the names of the local flora and fauna.
