Venice Historic Regatta 2025

Your next vacation in Venice will be something extraordinary: on Sunday, September 7, 2025 , you can attend the Regata Storica della Serenissima. The city will dress up in its finest attire and welcome anyone who wants to live an experience that will thrill like few others.

The city of Venice resists the waves of tourism, change, and fashions remarkably well: Venice has a rhythm all its own, marked by the slow beat of oars, the lapping of water against the walls, the reflection of the sun playing between the buildings. Once a year, this rhythm ignites with celebration: a celebration that transforms the Grand Canal into an open-air theater, where past and present blend in a scene unlike any other.

To attend the Regata Storica, you need to plan and organize ahead of time, so booking an apartment in Venice well in advance is the best solution. This way, with a short-term rental in Venice, you can enjoy the city's central locations, yet away from the tourist crowds, with walking paths close to home, even during such a sensational event. Get ready to participate in the 2025 Venice Regata Storica with us.

A tradition that spans the centuries

The first accounts of regattas date back to the 13th century, when they were not just sporting competitions, but a way to celebrate the city's power and pay homage to illustrious guests. Even today, the historical procession that opens the event evokes that Renaissance pomp: gilded gondolas with sublime embroidery, figures in traditional costume, and flags fluttering in the lagoon breeze.

When the gondolas pass by, you feel like you're inside a moving work of art; the boundary between myth and reality dissolves, and you find yourself in an enchanted world. The regatta inevitably involves all the citizens and visitors, who are drawn into the city's festive vortex.

The first regattas were linked to the Festa delle Marie, but this tradition is perhaps much older. The regatta has always been one of the most popular subjects illustrated by Venetian vedutisti, painters who loved to capture Venice's most anticipated event like a photograph.

The reenactment parade comes to life with numerous traditional 16th-century boats, painted in vibrant colors and manned by gondoliers in period costume, becoming an integral part of an extraordinary spectacle. This historic representation, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, offers a unique and unmissable spectacle.

The 2025 program of the Venice Historical Regatta

A celebration like this doesn't happen in a single day, but is prepared in advance. Preparations begin as early as August 29th, with families bringing food and drinks to be shared at free tables scattered around the city. The champions prepare for the rowing trials, and the sponsors show up to explain their motivations for supporting the event: in short, it's a perfect preparation.

  • Thursday 4 September: the blessing of the gondolini takes place in Campo della Salute;
  • Sunday, September 7: The official event takes place.

The parade will begin at 3:30 PM, with historic boats and costumed figures sailing along St. Mark's Basin, the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge, and the Ferrovia railway line. The parade will then return along the Grand Canal to Ca' Foscari.

The young rowers open the challenges with the traditional mascarete. Next come the women's categories, the pupparini, and finally the spectacular six-oared caorline, true queens of the water that move forward like ancient ships. Finally, the university challenges.

As the day draws to a close, the women's race begins aboard the two-oared mascarete, followed by the challenge between the gondolini, also rowed by pairs of rowers.

Agile, fast, legendary: the gondolini close the day with a breathtaking race, amidst the cheering of the spectators and the charm of a tradition that never ceases to excite. The event is truly unique and full of surprises: here you'll find the complete program and all the details you need to participate.
